Task 1 a- Installation Nasties!

VIDEO INSTALLATION

Video installation is a a form of contemporary art that connects video technology and installation art, making use of  all the aspect surrounding the environment in order affect the audience.

Marsia Alexander Clarke

Marsia makes her art from small cropper video cells that she calls marks which resembles the idea of marks on painting or in drawings. She quoted, " I am very interested in creating compositions with marks which are imbedded with a feeling refernce to the outer world..." she has a solo exibition that features a series on her work done on stretched canvas. Her work can be viewd at the California Museum of photography.

NB: Above are images of her work.

Bill Viola was born in Queens, New York, USA on January 25th 1951.He is a contemporary video artist. His art work explores mainly around  the theme of 'dualism', conveying the idea that one can not understand what they look like until they've seen its opposite. For example, you can't fully understand the complete purpose of life until you've faced loss (death). With light comes darkness and with consciousness also comes the unconsciousness. His work focuses mainly around human experience, such as death, birth and the aspect of consciousness. His work can be categorized into three different themes;  visual, conceptual and a unique combination of the two. Viola's work usually sinks the audience into the mindset of the images created in order to connect to the meaning behind it all by using ultra-slow motion videos.

Bill Viola's Acceptance video arts tells a story, from the heading you can tell it's about one accepting who they are. At first, we are seeing a woman figure come into sight rather out of focus. We watch as the subject emerges form out of the dark and into the light,  and the passage through what seems to be water.  Water being the representation of a 'barrier' an obstacle that has to be defeated, and there is no substitute path to get around it.. The juxtaposition of light and darkness, with light being acceptance and darkness being non-acceptance. Before the subject can move out of the darkness and into the light, she must go through some sort of a struggle. Then finally she emerges into light, with both the relief and the realization that the milestone has been reached.

Matthew Barney is an American artist who works in sculpture, photography, filming and drawing. He is most famous for his CREMASTER cycle sculpture video arts. The cremaster cycle consist of five feature length films. It was made over a period of 8 years, starting from 1994-2002.  His work has caused a lot of controversy, gaining both negative and positive feedback mainly because of the contents in which he portrayed them.
Cremation focuses on the process of creation. Barney uses video in terms of positioning, lighting, size and so on forth on his subject.

Overall, I've gained in depth knowledge about video installations and the controversy it faces in society. The creation of video installation varies, seeing as it could very well be anything as long as it is clear what the idea is. It can be humorous, tense, scary, confusing etc.

Rule of third and framing Photography

The rule of third is an imaginary grid drawn across an image to break down into nine equal squares. It works mainly fron the natural tendency of the human eye to be strongly focused on certain areas of an image. Whereas Framing is framing within a fram and it concentrates the viewers attention to a specific part of the image. It like look through different frames just to be able to see the image your eye is focused on.  It also add depths and more interest to the framed image.

Fast shutter

Fast shutter speed is when the exposure time is quite rapidly because of this the duration of the amount of light reaching the image sensor is quite low.  To accomplish the images below, I set the shutter speed to 1/250 and the ISO at 800 and with second the image was captured. I had to take multiple shots until I captured the perfect image. Fast shutter speed is like freezing an image. It captures things that the human eye cannot see, like the tiny little particles of water or water droplets and son forth.

Insert analysis

The insert in regards to the show that we worked on was based around fashion and its approach on people in daily life. We worked on pre production work, which involved a brainstorm of its context. Which led to us making a questionaire for people to answer, so we could draw up data as to if people would be interested in watching a fashion related insert or not. With the feedback we recieved vast majority of said they would, with a high percentage agreeing it allowed us to then go on and start to progress the insert.

I suggested we do a street fashion video, as it would be relatable to the viewers and have a relevance as its raw content. The idea stopping shoppers and asking them question is/was the aim of this which was a success because we did just that. As a group we came up with the questions that we would, we decided to do questions that would cater all people and would keep the viewers engaged.
I volunteerd to be presenter so I was asking the people questions but I tried not to be too in the video as I was feeling camera shy. I wrote the questionaire analysis, mentioned how beneficial it was to the group, why we did it and the process of it.

We did exceed the time limit by a few seconds but it managed to fit well into the running order so it was not much of an issue. Although we had difficulty getting the video on to the tricaster as it was not the right fit of format for its campatibility, so the editor re exported the video and it then worked on the tricaster.

When in viewing, the outcome of our insert visually was very artisitic in its editing skill and the product overall suceeded in well delivery of content. The insert contained all the right substanced we set out in the pre production.

As a group we worked very well together, we braught different qualities to the production which we worked off. It was refreshing to work with members that were willing to put everything in to making this a sucess. We were organised, persistant and got on exceptionaly well. Our insert was a success.
